Discusses the impact of 18th c. British portrait painting on late 19th c. British society with regard to the image of women and fashion as expressed in the 'Fair Women' exhibition, 1894, at the Grafton Galleries, London. Shows that interest in collecting works by artists such as Gainsborough, Reynolds, Romney increased. Discusses their influence on 19th c. painters such as Ellis Roberts and John Singer Sargent.
