Discusses the sketches and modellos (working model in London, Tate Gallery), 1951-1957, for the projected sculpture which won the competition in 1953, sponsored by the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London. Deals also with Butler's patron, John Hay Whitney, for a planned erection of the monument in west Berlin. The project was abandoned in 1960.
