Abstract (en)

Examines Adams's views on the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II as expressed in his 1944 book, Born free and equal: photographs of the loyal Japanese-Americans at the Manzanar relocation center, Inyo County, California, and contrasts them with those expressed in the 1988 book Manzanar, which also features Adams's photographs but supplant's Adams's text with an essay by John Hersey. Questions the aims and intentions of the latter book, which distorts Adams's views on the U.S. social and political system and its wartime policies.
