Discusses a reliquary (mentioned in 1770 and 1799 inventories of the treasury of Bamberg cathedral) bearing the monograms of Holy Roman emperor Henry II and his wife Cunegund and the date 1007. Demonstrates that the reliquary came into being in the described form--through the employment of older elements--no earlier than 1745. In 1746 Friedrich Karl arranged for the design and engraving of the monograms, his intention being to characterize the reliquary as a gift of the imperial couple. The reliquary was sold in 1803 and has since been lost.
