Surveys indirect narration, i.e. the expression of words and mental activity, in Western pictorial art, Medieval-20th c.; and focuses on the problem of indirect narration as discussed by Leonardo in the Paragone and by 17th-19th c. theorists. Analyzes Medieval means of representing words and thoughts by pictorial devices or substitutes such as text scrolls; shows that Alberti's theory of painting ruled these out; and discusses Leonardo's recommendations concerning the use of gesture and body language, relating these to developments in art theory in the 17th and 18th cs.
