Comments on African art and its reception in Europe since the Renaissance and particularly the early 20th c.; draws attention to failings of the exhibition, Magiciens de la terre, held in Paris 18 May-29 Aug 1989 at the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Grande Halle de La Villette; and examines works of contemporary painting and sculpture that have affinities with African art.
