Discusses the representation of German history, particularly the Nazi period, in recent paintings by German artists. Finds fault with the passive acceptance of history characterized by the paintings of Anselm Kiefer, Georg Baselitz, Jörg Immendorff, and Markus Lüpertz. Argues that the successful reworking of history has to destabilize it, calling into question the way history becomes history. Cites the paintings of Martin Kippenberger, Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke as exemplars of the latter approach.
