Contrasts Laura Gilpin's photographic views of the American West with the work of late 19th c. male photographers such as William Henry Jackson and Carleton Watkins, arguing that Gilpin's work constitutes a feminist rejection of artistic tradition discernible also in the photography of Anne Brigman.
