Paper presented at the colloquium, The Scientific Dimension of Cultural Development, Rome, Italy (29 Sept-2 Oct 1987). Finds parallels in the process used by both visual artists and scientists as they approach the evolving form in their respective work. Notes that the process in both fields is characterized by a repeated interaction between experience and thought, and the progressive recognition of an emerging unitary sense among an ensemble of signs--namely, brushstrokes or numbers.
