Examines the relation between theory and "empirical" art history, Gombrich's criticism of a loosely conceived but entrenched "Hegelianism", and the role of positivist and historicist theory in stylistic analysis and periodization. Concludes that art historical practice depends on unstated notions and beliefs of which it cannot accommodate discussion.
