Examines the course of Constable's development from a "natural" painter to a "national" painter in his own and Victorian critical perception, through an analysis of his relations with his family and property, the shift represented by the six large Stour River scenes of 1819-25, his letters, his publication of English landscape scenery (1833), and particularly the reception of The Valley Farm and The cornfield.
