Abstract (en)

Describes a unique group of surviving buildings of 13th c. origin comprising shops at both street and second floor level interconnected by a series of galleries known as "Rows." Speculates that their source may lie in Byzantine Constantinople, where similar structures may have been seen by English travelers and Crusaders.
