Presents documentary evidence showing that Ludovico Scotti, an otherwise unknown painter, was the author of the original central panel of the altarpiece commissioned by Ludovico Tancredi for S. Domenico, Siena. On the basis of passages from Tancredi's will (3 Aug 1505), deduces that the entire altarpiece was commissioned from Matteo di Giovanni (author of the lunette) ca.1494, that Scotti completed the central panel after Matteo's death, and that Fungai (author of the predella) completed the altarpiece after Scotti's death. Concludes that the Adoration of the Shepherds by Francesco di Giorgio was substituted for Scotti's painting some time before 1575.
