Abstract (en)

Argues that the source for the device of the picture-within-the-picture as used by Pacheco and his pupil Velázquez was not Flemish paintings of kitchen or market scenes with biblical scenes in the background but prints by the Wierix brothers in the Evangelicae historiae imagines of Jerome Nadal (1607).
