Abstract (en)

Surveys the history and function of the independent frame, especially the framing and exhibition of photographs since the late 19th c. Focuses on modernist and postmodernist views; and indicates problems inherent in the postmodernist view that the frame can open up the exhibition space and the frame's institutional context to self-critique.
