On the public debate aroused by Scott Tyler's installation work, What is the Proper Way to Display a U.S. Flag? (Chicago, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, 1989). Notes that it led to local and national flag-protection legislation and to the (temporary) withdrawal of funding from the Art Institute of Chicago and other museums. Also reports on the reactions of politicians, artists, and Tyler's fellow students, and compares an earlier incident in which the work of a student at the school created a furor.
