Reviews the exhibition, Twentieth-century art: selections for the tenth anniversary of the East Building, held in 1989-1990 at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, in which the museum's collection of 20th c. art is shown together with loans from private collections and from artists and their families. Focuses on the efforts of the National Gallery to establish its East Building as a major museum of modern art.
