Abstract (en)
Discusses the use of actual organic substances (food, flesh, excrement, the products of nature et al.) in 20th c. art, and examines their purpose and meaning. Cites Dada and Surrealist activities as well as Happenings and performances of the 1960s and 1970s, but focuses on the use of organic materials by contemporary artists, including Wolfgang Laib, Rona Pondick, Maureen Connor, Ann Hamilton and Mario Merz.
