Presents a counterview to prevailing opinions on the work of the Belgian artist, arguing that his work is not unique, enigmatic, or art-historically hermetic, but is deeply imbedded in its time and cognizant of it. Examines Broodthaer's oeuvre (1964-1976) and analyzes his themes and sources, citing his identification with Marcel Duchamp and René Magritte and his relation to aspects of the art of his own time including Pop art, Conceptual art and performance art.
