Examines a trend in recent American photography which visualizes disenchantment with mass image culture (e.g. Eileen Cowin, David Levinthal, Clegg & Guttmann, Sandy Skogland, Stephen Frailey, Neil Winokur). Argues that this internalized distancing system fails--for the effect achieved is at the artist's expense, not the media's.
