Traces the history of the ancient sculpture of Neptune from the Della Valle collection, acquired by the Medici in 1584 and installed in the garden of Villa Medici, Rome, and identified here as the subject of an illustration by Johann Heinrich Meyer in Winckelmanns Werke. Presents evidence showing that the sculpture was installed in Piazza Nettuno, Livorno in 1789 (having been removed from Rome in 1787); and that it was taken down in poor condition some 40 years later, taken to Pisa, and lost.
