Examines the Opera del Duomo's patronage of architectural and sculptural projects in Florence in the 15th c., noting that the Operai retained control over commissions by not entrusting any given one to a single artist, but preferring joint ventures. One example discussed is the management of the project for the dome of S. Maria del Fiore and the Operai's exploitation of the rivalry between Brunelleschi and Ghiberti.
