Abstract (en)
Relates the light in Leonardo's S. John the Baptist (Paris, Louvre) to the description of S. John, the messenger who came to bear witness to the light but who was not himself the true light, in the opening passages of the Gospel of S. John; and relates the erotic aspect of the painting to the Christian view of sexual love as a metaphor for divine love.
