- Surveys 15th and 16th c. drawings of ancient city gates in the form of triumphal arches in Fano, Pavia, Spello, Perugia and Verona by Giuliano, Antonio and Bastiano da Sangallo, Baldassarre Peruzzi and Andrea Palladio. Argues that the drawings in the 15th c. had a predominantly creative emphasis but that a change occurred in the 16th c. toward a formal, objective rendering of the ancient buildings.
