Abstract
(en)
Catalogue published in connection with the exhibition, organized by the Helsinki Festival (Helsingin Juhlaviikot/Helsingfors Festspel) as its main event. Discusses the influence of the German architect, active in Finland, 1814-1840, on Finnish architecture and city planning. Notes that Engel brought the Petersburgian Empire style, related to Neo-classicism, to Finland. A seven member research team with Henrik Lilius as supervisor has brought new scholarly information to light on Engel's work in connection with the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Engel's death. The exhibition included 117 city plans and architectural designs for administrative buildings, churches, hospitals, prisons, school buildings, city halls, manors, residential buildings etc. Short versions of the catalogue have been published in Finnish, Swedish and German.
