Examines the creation of the dual monarchy of William and Mary from the perspective of women's history, attributing Mary's subordinate role to prevailing patriarchal ideas and concluding that, despite her inferior constitutional status, she was a stronger and more competent ruler than either she herself realized or historians have understood. Examines the public images of Mary, drawing inter alia on the 28 medals commemorating her coronation, 11 regency medals, and 36 medals commemorating her death in 1694.
