Abstract (en)

Traces the transition from early praise of Elizabeth as a nubile virgin to later adulation of her as a perpetual virgin in the wake of the marriage negotiations of 1579-83 with the duc d'Alençon, and its reflection in documents, poetry, drama, and portraiture in her lifetime and after her death (Camden, 1625).
