Comments on the issue of race versus quality of art with respect to the career of the Pakistani artist Rashid Araeen and the situation of non-white artists in general in Britain. Written in relation to a forthcoming exhibition, The other story, at the Hayward Gallery, London; and to two 1988 exhibitions: From modernism to post-modernism (Cardiff, Chapter Arts Centre, 18 June-17 July), and The essential black art (London, Chisenhale Gallery, 5 Feb-5 Mar).
