Abstract (en)
Contrasts the activities of George Booth, second earl of Warrington (1675-1758), and William Beckford (1760-1844) as collectors and commissioners of silver. Warrington commissioned a great quantity of plain, remarkably heavy plate. For him silver was a token of financial security. Beckford was interested in the aesthetic properties of silver. He was a connoisseur and informed antiquarian who commissioned and collected silver of considerable stylistic sophistication and complexity, reflecting inter alia his interest in historicism.
