Abstract
(en)
Analyzes the impact of the system of the Académie des beaux-arts (Paris) on the French Academy in Rome and the relationship between the two institutions in the 19th c. Focuses on Prix de Rome sculptors; looks at their envois in light of the Academy's expectations; and notes their struggles to express their individuality in a system that demanded conformity and stifled their Romantic impulses in favor of academic classicism.
