Reports on two rescue excavations at Wyebridge Street (site 1) and Dixton Road (site 2). Site 1 demonstrated the existence of Roman iron working in the area with traces of 12th c. and later occupation. Site 2 demonstrated the existence of a substantial defensive rampart and ditch. These features could not be dated; they were Medieval and may have pre-dated the town wall which was probably built in the late 13th or early 14th c. Few finds included pottery dating up to the 18th c. Provides background history of the town and summary of previous excavations in the area.
