Abstract
(en)
Discusses Alexander VII Chigi's patronage of the church of S. Tommaso da Villanova, by Bernini and assistants, with an altar painting of the Crucifixion by Pietro da Cortona and stuccoes by Antonio Raggi based on Johann Paul Schor's festival decorations for the canonization (1658) of S. Thomas of Villanueva. Traces the iconography of the saint in the later 17th c. paintings of the church. Attributes to Schor two paintings in the lower church of S. Nicolò. Describes paintings by Aureliano Milani and Giuseppe Ranucci in the church of S. Francesco (now the church of the Congregazione di Propaganda Fide) and by Gaetano Sortini in the chapel of the Jesuit villa (later the Villa Torlonia). Appendix: undated (18th c.) inventory of the Jesuit villa.
