Argues that Alberti drew on ancient rhetoric, in which historia was a species of narrative, to promote an equation between painting and historia inherited from the Middle Ages. Late medieval thinkers regarded historia as the literal meaning of actual events that bore higher moral significance. Modeling his discussion on Quintilian, Alberti showed how artistic form invested a narrative painting with the multilevel significance of historia.
