Reconstructs the career of a north Italian miniaturist named Petrus whose signature appears on an illuminated frontispiece detached from a copy of Pliny's Historia naturalis printed in Venice in 1476. Argues that his work reflects Milanese, Ferrarese, Paduan, and Venetian influences, and establishes these links through the known or probable patronage of Leonardo Botta (Milanese ambassador to Venice), Gian Galeazzo Sforza, Alfonso d'Aragona, and Celso Maffei. Includes an appendix of 11 works ascribed to Petrus.
