Abstract (en)

Argues that Gerard de Lairesse's painting of Cleopatra's Banquet (Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum) should be interpreted as an example of luxury leading to ruin. Suggests that the Death of Cleopatra in Toronto (Art Gallery of Ontario) by the same painter is a companion piece to that in Amsterdam.
