Examines problems of dating, patronage, and iconography concerning the two pairs of bronze doors commissioned by Cosimo and Lorenzo de'Medici for the Old Sacristy (Florence, S. Lorenzo). Focuses on allusions to the Medici and especially to Cosimo's branch as the ruling line; and argues that the choice of saints on the Apostles' Doors represents the Medici's importance to Florence and the papacy and indicates connections to the Council of Ferrara-Florence (1438-39), which Cosimo financed.
