Abstract (en)
Argues that the object in the right foreground of Lotto's Nativity in the National Gallery, Washington, is not a mousetrap but a piece of wood with a mortise at one end, alluding to Joseph's trade. As it bears the signature and date, this constitutes a link between Joseph the carpenter and Lotto the artist. Relates this to the cult of Joseph that developed in Italy in the early 16th c., especially in Bergamo where the picture was painted in 1523.
