Reexamines the iconography of the Blinding of Samson (Frankfurt, Städelsches Kunstinstitut). Notes that the artist based the figure of Samson on an engraving by Cornelis Cort after Titian's Tityus (Madrid, Prado); and argues that he followed contemporary reformist theology in emphasizing the destruction of Samson's eyesight as God's punishment for his sinful relationship with Delilah, to whom he was attracted through his eyes.
