Discusses Botticelli's painting in the Alte Pinakothek, here dated 1492-1493. Argues the artist's intent was to memorialize Lorenzo's death in a religious picture that would, at the same time, through audacious use of classical illusion in its main figure (Christ), embody many of the political and humanist themes associated with the Magnifico throughout his public life. Contends that Botticelli's Christ alludes to Apollo and Meleager and, hence, to Lorenzo.
