Thoughts on a recent exhibition of paintings by local amateur artists held at the Winter Gardens, Milton Keynes. Author considers the irony that the works were almost exclusively rural idylls, painted by residents of a 20th c. light industrial city. Concludes that "they are a testament as sinister as it is poignant that the aspiration to refuse the modern...is, so long as it remains stereotypical, already catered for, that is to say represented, within it."
