Discusses the role of architectural history in the restoration of churches. Takes as example the restoration of S. Marien in Osnabrück, begun in 1987. The Gothic hall church was constructed mainly in the years 1306-1350 with additions and alterations made in the 15th c. It was restored in 1901-1903, severely damaged in 1944, and restored again in the years 1945-1950.
