Considers Banham's search--particularly in the 1950s--to find a dynamic and persuasive alternative to the conventional thinking and operational lores that, in his view, blighted most contemporary architecture and design. Author identifies three main tributaries which made up art autre: Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism and Art Brut.
