Presents historical and documentary evidence in support of the identification of a painting purchased by Georges Wildenstein from the Barberini collection (now restored and on loan to the Metropolitan Museum, New York) as the autograph version of Caravaggio's Lute-player painted for Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte and acquired from his estate by Cardinal Antonio Barberini. Compares the Giustiniani version (Leningrad, Hermitage), and draws attention to the recent identification of the subject as a castrato singer, probably a Spaniard named Pedro Montoya.
