Presents various reasons why the Stillman Halbadier (Malibu, J. Paul Getty Museum) cannot be the portrait of Cosimo I after Montemurlo (1537) described by Vasari, and argues instead that it is the portrait of Francesco Guardi, also mentioned by Vasari, executed 1529-30. Also suggests, on the basis of its relationship to the profile drawing of Cosimo by Pontormo in the Uffizi, Florence, that a portrait sometimes assigned to a follower of Vasari (Firenze, Gallerie fiorentine, no. 5052) could be a portrait of Cosimo by Portormo painted before late 1537. Finally, presents documentary evidence concerning Francesco Guardi.
