Reexamines the Kingston Lacy copy, recently cleaned, of Velázquez's Las Meninas (Madrid, Prado), purchased by William Bankes from the heirs of Jovellanos, who considered it an original sketch. Attributes it to Juan Bautista Martínez del Mazo and suggests it came from the collection of Gaspar de Haro, marqués del Carpio. (Appendices with a technical report on the picture, and a list of paintings attributed to Velázquez in the Carpio collection in 1677 and 1688.)
