Abstract (en)
Describes a rare surviving example of a building thatched with heather ca.1770, at Bardon Mill. The two-story structure includes byre/granary, and stable. Notes artifacts found in the thatched roof and describes recent re-thatching. A history of heather thatching since the 14th c. precedes an illustrated catalogue of buildings known to have had heather thatching in the counties of Durham, Northumberland and Yorkshire.
