Relates two works acquired by the Getty in 1983, A Merry Company in an Arbor and A Ball Game before a Country Palace, to two other landscapes by Van de Venne--Prince Maurits Going to the Falcon Hunt (Swiss private collection) and Winter Landscape with Skaters near a Castle (Worcester Art Museum). Argues that these were conceived 1614-1615 as a series representing the four seasons. Suggests that the artist was inspired by the poetry of Philibert van Borsselen.
