Surveys the history of connoisseurship and offers a critique of the methodology employed by the Stichting Foundation Rembrandt Research Project. Argues that results of the group's work to date raise major doubts about the efficacy of applying academic hypotheses to matters of connoisseurship and the attribution of pictures.
