Survey of the early use of photography for recording and reproducing works of art, particularly in Britain. Focuses on the patronage of Prince Albert, his contacts with photography in Germany, his donations of photographs to the South Kensington Museum (now the Victoria and Albert, London), and his project for photographing the Royal Collections. Also discusses the commercial market for art reproductions and the role of the Arundel Society in disseminating reproductions. Finally, examines the rise of documentary photography and color photography.
