Preliminary report on discoveries resulting from the interdisciplinary study, begun Jan 1990, of the bronze statue of S. Peter (Rome, Vatican, S. Pietro): the casting dates from 1265-1379, according to thermoluminescence; the statue is modeled to achieve optical effects that are calculated in relation to viewpoints; and the bronze was originally painted. Both the modeling and the painted surface correspond to techniques of Arnolfo di Cambio, supporting attribution of the S.Peter to him. Also presents new evidence concerning the marble S. Peter from the facade of Old S. Peter's in the Grotte vaticane (Rome), revealing that it is comprised of three separate elements: the body of a Roman statue of a philosopher with a head attributed to Arnolfo and hands added 1752-53 by Giovan Paolo Pasta.
